During Seniors Week, many organizations are hosting arts-related events and activities. We encourage you to check them out!

 

Participate in Creative Writing at SCONA. A wonderful, friendly, inviting way to put that story or poem of yours on paper!

The Churchill Retirement Community has plenty of activities for you to enjoy!

June 1

Live artist studio: Local Irish artist Jim will be creating art and paintings in the lounge for others to watch and get inspired from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

June 2

The Churchill Singers will perform a 30 minute program of memorable songs for people to enjoy and sing-along to. Program starts at 2 p.m.

June 2 to 5

Showcase of creations made by seniors at the Churchill Retirement Community (hand-made doll house, photographs, paintings, afghans, published books, etc.) The showcase runs from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily.

June 3

Stories and poetry reading about Russian Culture by published poet Ella Zeltserman at 1 p.m.

June 4

Poetry workshop by published poet Joyce Harries, inspiring creation in later life and talking about how to get started at 1:30 p.m.

June 5

Evening dance beginning at 7 p.m. Music provided by local band Friends and Neighbors.

Check out a variety of arts activities at the SouthWest Edmonton Seniors Association.

Quilting Group: June 1, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A program for people who love to quilt. Participants bring their own projects and materials and work alongside fellow quilters. There is also a “block of the month.” Both experienced quilters and beginners are welcomed.

Art Group: June 5, 9:30 a.m. to noon. An informal drop-in program for artists wanting to share studio space with like-minded individuals.  Participants bring their own art supplies (drawing, water colour, and mixed media) and create art in a social, supportive environment. Note: There is no instructor for his program, and oil paints and strong scents are not allowed in the studio due to participant allergies. Cost: $2, members; $4, non-members.

Knitting and Stitching Group: June 5, noon to 3 p.m. An informal drop-in program with no instructor, where members can share ideas and learn from one another. Bring your own project (knitting, cross stitch, crochet, hand sewing, etc.) and work in a fun, social atmosphere. Cost: $2, members; $4, non-members.

Creative Writing: June 8, 9:30 a.m. to noon. This creative writing class will develop a structure for memoir or journal writing and use writing prompts to write. Your writing will be further developed through writing exercises; editing and revision will be discussed. Registration is required; cost: $10, members; $15, non-members.
