Shirley A. Serviss is a long-time participant in Edmonton's literary scene as a writer and writing instructor. She has published three collections of poetry and co-edited two anthologies. Her poetry and personal essays have appeared in numerous literary magazines and collections. In addition to teaching at MacEwan University and the University of Alberta's Faculty of Extension, she has taught at numerous seniors centres and for the Edmonton Lifelong Learning Association (ELLA). Shirley works part-time as the staff literary Artist on the Wards for the Friends of University Hospitals and would be interested in offering poetry to seniors with dementia as well as facilitating memoir, poetry or creativity workshops. She is also interested in performing her work.

What the artist has done

  • I have extensive experience teaching writing for the University of Alberta's Faculty of Extension, Grant MacEwan University, Central Lions Seniors Recreation Centre, the Cross Cancer's Arts and Medicine program, the Alexandra Writers Centre in Calgary and at numerous writing conferences, retreats and centres.
  • Experience working with seniors: I taught for the Faculty of Extension's Spring Session for Seniors for many years and later at Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association. I also taught at the Jewish Drop In Centre. I currently teach at Central Lions Seniors Recreation Centre. I often work with seniors in my other teaching contracts and in my part-time position as literary Artist on the Wards for the Friends of University of Alberta Hospitals.

  • the Stroll of Poets Society.
  • I've also been involved in organizing the Edmonton Poetry Festival. I have published three collections of poetry and have worked in journalism and publishing and as a freelance writer.
